Still Bottom

In International Development, Niger on November 10, 2006 at 5:15 am

The new 2006 UN Human Development Report came out, and Niger is again ranked at the very bottom – 177 out of 177. Here is a very informative page about the statistics.

The only opportunity that Niger has is to capitalize on this negative publicity to get more aid money. As I mentioned in another post below – there should, at a minimum, be some kind of special consideration for the poorest country in the world. NGO’s should do all their “pilot projects” testing out new and innovative development interventions.

We’ll see what the coming years bring – China will most likely increase investment as a part of their blanket African investments. Niger’s debt was canceled last year, so they’ll have more money to pay civil servants. On verra.
